U.S. Nonprofit Empowers Veterans to Protect African Wildlife
New York City, NY – U.S. nonprofit organization VETPAW is empowering veterans from across the country to protect African wildlife. Its conservation efforts consist of training local rangers, operating surveillance teams, promoting education, and collecting donations.
Former U.S. marine Ryan Tate founded the organization in 2013 because he recognized the need for improved African wildlife conservation efforts. While the organization is concerned for all African endangered species, Tate is primarily focused on protecting elephants and rhinoceros.
His team consists of post-9/11 veterans who are passionate about helping animals and excited to apply their military experience. Members are also concerned with stopping illegal trade, as it is one of the major funding sources for terrorist and criminal networks.
One way the team helps conservation efforts is by training local park rangers. Members teach local rangers the best techniques when it comes to dealing with poachers. This allows them to more effectively combat illegal hunting and protect endangered wildlife.
Another way the team helps conservation efforts is through its surveillance teams. Trained and experienced veterans operate on the ground, stopping hunters before they act. The surveillance teams work with local African rangers and authorities to make their efforts as effective as possible.

On the reserves it is stationed on, the team continually monitors species to ensure their wellbeing. They also conduct research to determine the best methods for protecting endangered wildlife.
Because the organization focuses on veterans, most members have military experience. However, it also employs people with conservation experience, medical experience, etc.
Aside from its active work, the organization also collects donations. All proceeds go to the team’s work of protecting African wildlife. Additionally, 100% of the profits from its conservation safaris go to the organization’s cause.
