Event | Great Gathering Celebrates Forbes Digital 100

October 15
02:09 2019

The First Global Digital Economy Alliance Summit concluded successfully with a grand ceremony releasing the 2019 Forbes Digital 100 list. The autumn-day event, which took place in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province of China, on 11 October, featured a great lineup of guests and speakers.

According to the Digital Economy Report 2019 released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), global digital economy is mainly driven by China and the United States, and its development is still at an early stage. With the world’s Internet users growing rapidly over the past 20 years, the digital economy has emerged as a new economic pattern. It has grown to drive economic development, upgrading and transition as a high ground for the new round of global industrial competition.

Hence the theme of the event: Building a Global Community with Shared Future for Digital Economy. Over 1,200 participants from various sectors gathered in Shijiazhuang and joined discussions on digital economy in diverse activities including keynote speeches and roundtables.

Speakers at the event included Ms. Xia Yanjun, Vice Governor of Hebei Province; Ms. Qu Weizhi, Former Deputy Minister of Information Industry and Former Deputy Director of the office of State Council leadership group on information technology; and Mr. Sherman Lee, Executive Director at Forbes Global Media Holding Company and CEO of Forbes China.

In her speech, Vice Governor Xia noted that a great commitment to the development of the digital economy to generate new economic vitality has become an important strategy for countries against the backdrop of economic globalization. The digital economy brings both opportunities and challenges, said the Vice Governor, and the world needs to join forces in addressing how to achieve inclusive growth, openness and sharing, and exchanges and integration via the digital economy.

Dedicated to the theme of Building a Global Community with Shared Future for Digital Economy, this summit offers a high-level platform for global governance that promotes dialogue, communication, cooperation and development for digital economies across the world. The event presents an opportunity for high-level exchanges in new forms and on a large scale. The China International Digital Economy Expo (of which the summit is part) is aimed at facilitating and deepening exchanges, mutual learning and cooperation, so as to galvanize joint efforts for new breakthroughs in the digital economy and new possibilities for shift to new economic driving forces.

Delivering a speech is Ms. Qu Weizhi, Former Deputy Minister of Information Industry and Former Deputy Director of the office of State Council leadership group on information technology.

In her speech, Ms. Qu emphasized that the world’s exploration in this sector mainly revolves around the digitalization of industries and the industrialization of digital technology. The conversations on future growth trends expects a lot from the digital economy, which, in new areas of economic competition, is consistent with the logic of the new economy driving the new normal, and new forces, new development. For the digital economy to develop, she believes, the mechanism of trust needs to be strengthened for the gradual formation of consensus (among participants); stronger innovative applications are necessary for the digital economy to deliver tangible benefits; international industrial alliances should play an active role to improve the mechanism whereby platforms from different countries develop together as an integrated whole.

In his speech, Mr. Lee noted that digital industries are accelerators of transformative changes in the source, efficiency and quality of economic growth. These sectors have become a new high ground for global competition. Not only has China’s digital transformation had a far-reaching impact on its own economy, but it is also increasingly influencing global digital progress. By facilitating high-level exchanges, he said, Forbes China will help maintain China’s world leadership in the development of the digital economy.

Keynote speeches were delivered by Grzegorz W. Kolodko, former First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Poland, Director of TIGER — Transformation, Integration and Globalization Economic Research at the Kozminski University in Warsaw; Simon Mead, CEO of Cambridge Wireless (CW); and Ni Guangnan, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Prof. Grzegorz W. Kolodko delivered a speech with the theme “Irreversible Globalization in the Digital Age,” offering an in-depth analysis on the current state of globalization from an economic point of view. While populism and neo-nationalism are surfacing amid neoliberalism and global economic crises today, says Kolodko, given the connectivity and micro-economic basis of globalization, particularly the rise of a new technological revolution exemplified by digital technology, neopragmatism, a new scientific and technological revolution and the future ramifications of globalization all guarantee that a globalizing trend in the direction of inclusiveness is irreversible. Prof. Kolodko then discussed with Mr. Dzodin how to drive the inclusive development of global digital economy.

Russell Flannery, Chief China Advisor of Forbes Global Media Holding Company and Chief Editor of Forbes China announces the new edition of the list and offers his interpretation

After that, Russell Flannery, Chief China Advisor of Forbes Global Media Holding Company and Chief Editor of Forbes China, announced the 2019 edition of Forbes’s Digital 100 list and offered an in-depth reading of the list.

To compile the new Digital 100, according to Mr. Flannery, Forbes first started with technology, media, digital retail and telecommunications companies that made the 2019 edition of Global 2000. From there, he said, we looked at the most recent sales, profits and asset figures as well as market capitalizations as of September 27, 2019. Like with the Global 2000 list, Digital 100 companies were ranked by all four metrics and received a score for each. The scores were then added to create a composite score. The highest composite score gets the highest overall rank on the list. With 14 listees, Greater China ranks second on the list.
